Our Testing Methodology
Full transparency on how we evaluate, score, and rank every online casino — including the exact weights behind our composite ratings.
At TopAusCasinos, every casino review is the product of a structured, repeatable testing process. Our four-person editorial team spends approximately two weeks evaluating each casino — creating real accounts, depositing real Australian dollars, playing real games, and processing real withdrawals. No casino can pay for a higher score, and no shortcuts are taken.
This page explains every step of our process and the exact scoring weights behind our composite ratings. We publish this information because we believe transparency is the foundation of trust. If you can replicate our evaluation using the criteria below, you should arrive at similar conclusions.
Our top-ranked casinos are re-tested every 60 days. If standards slip, scores are adjusted accordingly. You can see our current rankings on the casino reviews page.
Scoring Weights at a Glance
Each casino's composite score is calculated from seven weighted criteria. The weights reflect what matters most to Australian players based on our research and reader feedback.
Withdrawal speed and reliability carries the highest weight because our reader surveys consistently identify it as the single most important factor in choosing an online casino.
Step 1: Account Creation Testing
Every evaluation begins with creating a new account using legitimate Australian details. We assess the registration process for clarity, speed, and transparency. Specifically, we evaluate:
- How long the sign-up process takes (target: under three minutes)
- Whether the casino clearly discloses its licensing and terms before registration
- Whether responsible gambling tools (deposit limits, session timers) are offered during sign-up or immediately after
- The KYC (Know Your Customer) verification process — what documents are required, how quickly verification is completed, and whether the process is clearly explained
We strongly recommend completing KYC verification immediately after registration. Casinos that make this process simple and fast score higher in our evaluations.
Step 2: Deposit Testing
We test a minimum of three deposit methods at every casino. For Australian players, this typically includes cryptocurrency (Bitcoin or Ethereum), PayID or bank transfer, and at least one alternative method such as Neosurf, Visa, or an e-wallet. For each method, we record:
- Processing time from initiation to funds appearing in the casino balance
- Minimum and maximum deposit limits
- Any fees charged by the casino (separate from network or bank fees)
- Ease of the deposit interface — is it intuitive, or does it require unnecessary steps?
- Whether the deposited amount matches what appears in the account (to verify no hidden deductions)
Deposit options carry a 5% weight in our scoring because most casinos handle deposits competently. However, a casino that supports fewer than three methods, charges deposit fees, or has unusually high minimums will be penalised.
Step 3: Game Library Evaluation
Our game library evaluation carries a 20% weight and examines both breadth and quality. We assess:
- Total number of titles and how many are available to Australian players (some providers geo-restrict certain games)
- Software provider diversity — we look for a mix of tier-one providers (Pragmatic Play, Play'n GO, Evolution, NetEnt) alongside niche studios
- Pokie variety: classic pokies, video pokies, Megaways, progressive jackpots, and crash games
- Live dealer coverage: blackjack, roulette, baccarat, game shows, and available table limits
- Game load times and stability across desktop and mobile
- Search and filtering functionality — can you find a specific title or provider quickly?
A casino with 12,000 titles but poor navigation and slow load times will score lower than one with 4,000 well-organised, fast-loading games. Quality and usability matter as much as raw numbers.
Step 4: Bonus Term Analysis
Bonus fairness and transparency account for 15% of our composite score. For every welcome bonus and ongoing promotion, we analyse:
- Wagering requirement multiplier (under 30x is good; under 20x is excellent; above 45x is a red flag)
- Game contribution rates — which games count toward clearing the wagering requirement and at what percentage
- Maximum bet limit while bonus funds are active (typically A$5-A$10 per spin)
- Time limit for completing the wagering requirement
- Maximum cashout cap on bonus winnings (uncapped is ideal)
- Whether the bonus is "sticky" (only winnings can be withdrawn) or "non-sticky" (bonus funds themselves are withdrawable)
- Clarity of the terms and conditions — are they written in plain English, or buried in legalese?
We calculate the "true value" of every bonus by modelling expected returns under the stated wagering conditions. This figure, rather than the headline bonus amount, is what determines the bonus component of a casino's score.
Step 5: Withdrawal Processing — Our Most Critical Test
Withdrawal speed and reliability is the most heavily weighted factor in our scoring at 25%, and for good reason: a casino is only as good as its willingness to pay you. For each casino, we process a minimum of three withdrawals using different methods. We measure:
- Time from withdrawal request to funds arriving in our external account
- Whether the casino imposes a "pending period" during which withdrawals can be reversed (a practice we strongly penalise)
- Withdrawal limits — daily, weekly, and monthly caps
- Any fees deducted from the withdrawal amount
- Whether additional KYC documentation is requested at the withdrawal stage (a sign of poor onboarding)
- Consistency — does the casino pay out at the same speed on the third withdrawal as the first?
During our most recent testing cycle, we processed 87 individual withdrawals across our ten ranked casinos. Every withdrawal was successfully completed. The fastest result was a 23-minute Bitcoin payout from BetNinja; the slowest was a four-business-day bank transfer.
Any casino that declines a legitimate withdrawal, imposes unreasonable delays, or applies undisclosed fees is immediately removed from our rankings and flagged in our records.
Step 6: Customer Support Testing
Customer support carries a 10% weight. We contact each casino's support team through every available channel (live chat, email, and phone where offered) with a standardised set of questions covering:
- Bonus terms clarification — do agents accurately explain wagering requirements?
- Withdrawal timing enquiries — are estimates consistent with our actual test results?
- Technical issues — how quickly and effectively does support resolve a simulated problem?
- Responsible gambling requests — does the casino promptly action a deposit limit change or cooling-off request?
We record response times (live chat target: under two minutes; email target: under six hours), the accuracy of information provided, and the professionalism of the interaction. Casinos that offer 24/7 live chat with knowledgeable, Australian-timezone-aware agents score highest.
Step 7: Mobile Testing
Mobile compatibility accounts for 10% of our score. We test each casino on both iOS (iPhone 15) and Android (Samsung Galaxy S24) devices using Safari and Chrome respectively. Our mobile evaluation covers:
- Page load time on 4G and Wi-Fi connections
- Touch interface responsiveness and navigation usability
- Game availability on mobile compared to desktop (some casinos restrict certain titles on smaller screens)
- Deposit, withdrawal, and account management functionality from mobile
- Whether the casino offers a progressive web app (PWA) or native app option
- Live dealer streaming quality on mobile connections
With over 60% of Australian online casino sessions now occurring on mobile devices, a subpar mobile experience is a significant drawback — even if the desktop site is excellent.
Step 8: Licensing Verification
Licensing and regulatory standing accounts for 15% of our composite score. For each casino, we verify:
- The claimed licence is genuine — we check directly with the issuing authority's public registry
- The licence is current and in good standing (not suspended, revoked, or expired)
- The licence holder matches the company operating the casino (some operators use shell entities)
- Whether the casino holds additional certifications such as eCOGRA fair play seals or independent RNG audit reports
- The casino's complaint history — we review player forums and dispute resolution records for patterns of unresolved issues
Most casinos serving Australian players hold Curaçao eGaming licences. While this is not the strictest jurisdiction globally, it provides a baseline level of oversight. Casinos that hold licences from multiple jurisdictions or supplement their Curaçao licence with independent audits receive higher scores in this category.
Calculating the Final Score
Each of the seven criteria above receives a score from 0 to 100. These individual scores are then combined using the published weights to produce a composite score out of 100:
Composite = (Withdrawal × 0.25) + (Games × 0.20) + (Bonus × 0.15)
+ (Licensing × 0.15) + (Support × 0.10)
+ (Mobile × 0.10) + (Deposits × 0.05)
Casinos scoring 90 or above earn our highest recommendation. Scores between 85 and 89 are considered very good. Below 85, a casino may still be listed but with clear caveats about its weaker areas. Any casino scoring below 75 is not included in our published rankings.
